This blog is basically a place for me to vent, brag, cry, celebrate and generally babble about my daughter’s journey through life. I’m here to keep a record for myself, share what I know, ask what you know and hopefully have some much needed laughs along the way.
According to current information, 1 out of every 50 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). One of them is mine.
By the way, the WordPress theme I’m using is called “Spectrum.” Seemed a good fit. 😉
Why “Rainbow Puzzles?”
The title Rainbow Puzzles, refers to the symbols most often used to represent Autism: rainbow colors (for the spectrum) and puzzle pieces (solving the mysteries, etc). It also refers to the magnet I have on my car which is comprised of multicolored puzzle pieces and says “Autism Awareness” on it.
Many people who use the puzzle pieces metaphor seek to cure Autism (or “Defeat Autism Now!”), while many on the rainbow side of things choose to embrace it (as a culture, as a “superpower,” etc). Seeing as I fall somewhere in the middle… or, more accurately, I tend to alternate between the two “sides,” it seemed like the perfect title for my blog.
I considered “Warrior Victim,” a play on Jenny McCarthy’s infamous statement that there are “warrior moms” and “victim moms” in the Autism community. However, I felt that title would be too much of a trigger, as her speech was very upsetting to many.
